How to Make Short Eyelashes Look Longer: 5 Easy Tips

I have what I consider to be short eyelashes. Mascara does almost nothing for them. In my earlier days of wearing makeup I had a bit of an obsession with mascara. I watched a lot of mascara reviews and read lots of Makeup Alley reviews before I bought a mascara. It was hard to find reviews from wearers that didn’t have long eyelashes so I had to just buy and try anything that claimed to be lengthening. After much trial and error, I found what worked for me. And I’ve picked up some tips from all of this experimentation that help short eyelashes look longer. You can use all the tips at once or just one or a couple that work for you if your eyelashes need help like mine.

1. Pick Mascaras with Plastic Brush Bristles

Plastic bristle brushes function like a comb for eyelashes. They are able to coat every lash easier than the dense bristles that feel like pipe cleaners or the non plastic bristles. 😂I’ve found that plastic brushes with short bristles have given the most consistent results in making my eyelashes stand out. Both brushes with short dense plastic spikes or thin brushes with short plastic bristles work well because they comb through every lash. And I think dense brushes are too much for lashes that are shorter and sparse.

2. Layer Your Mascaras

For short eyelashes, I’ve found that it is best to layer mascaras. I discovered this one when I used L’Oreal Telescopic Carbon Black which was the first mascara I’ve used that had an obvious affect on lengthening my eyelashes. It is very dark in color hence the name “Carbon Black” and has a thin brush with tiny bristles on it. And I later bought Covergirl Lash Blast Clump crusher. And together, they made my eyelashes look like falsies. Experiment with layering your mascaras for the best results for you.

3. Curl Those Lashes

Curling your eyelashes are a big help for making eyelashes look longer. And contrary to what is recommended for lash curling (curling before hand). I think its best to curl afterwards. In my experience the weight of the mascara makes the eyelashes drop if its applied after curling. If you curl afterwards the stiffness of the lashes helps hold them up. You’re probably like duhh! Everyone knows how to curl eyelashes and that they make them look better. I know it is obvious. But I think the order in which you curl them is the important part.

4. Focus More on the Tips of Lashes

If you focus more on the tips and outer lashes you’ll have more length and volume. Or course the lashes should be coated from root to tips. But focus more of the mascara on the tips and it will build the fibers on the tips which will increase the length of the lashes more so than if the lashes had an even coat from root to tip.

5. Use a Volumizing Mascara

Volumizing sounds opposite of what you want. But I’ve found that it makes short eyelashes look longer. And it is flattering rather than those marketed as lengthening. Those that only lengthen can sometimes make eyelashes look sparse or only long and then they just look like spider legs. But volumizing mascaras with the types of bristles like I mentioned in number one are best for short lashes because they coat every lash which makes them stand out more. With a volumizing mascara your eyelashes fan out more and with the other steps like focusing more on the tips you get the best of both worlds both length and volume.

Maybe you already use some of these tips and I’m just stating the obvious. 😄😅 If you have any leave them below or head over to my CafĂŠ tab at the top and leave your mascara tips or any other makeup and beauty tips you love.
